You Met Me At The Right Time
My experience voting for our first woman president starts in 2016 and swiftly jumps to 2024. Hillary wasn't my first choice, I'll never apologize for that. I respect her much more now, but I never forgave her for the 2007 primaries where she spent a lot of money and time diminishing President Obama. I did cast a vote for her in 2016 but my inner protest was that I supported Bernie the whole time.
Skip forward to 2019, I was always borderline Harris vs. Biden, my entire focus was how to get out of the pandemic and get that sleazy spray tan grifter out of Our House. I always saw Harris as our first woman (officially) in office. Nevermind the incredible impact of former first ladies like Abigail Adams, Edith Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt, which we never really learn much about in school (Gen X never did, anyway). I stand by and celebrate us getting a fantastic VP in 2020 and know we always needed Madame VP before we could have Madame President because misogyny.
I had the highest hopes that President Biden would hand over the reins to President Harris, but still have the PTSD from the pandemic, January 6th and the thought of That Fucking Guy (TFG) getting his grimy hands back on our democracy. After 34 felony convictions and being adjudicated a rapist, the fact that this election is so close is clear data on the brainwashing and loss of our friends, family and neighbors. So this time in history will always be bittersweet for me.
I do not judge choices when you don't have facts, but when the facts are in your lap, you own the consequences of your actions. Don't look to a higher power for forgiveness, look to your neighbors, the women and children you're betraying. TFG and the entire GOP have corrupted religion and are in no position to lead for the foreseeable future. I certainly won't take morality lessons from those who don't respect women or won't elect them because misogyny... again.
And don't get me started on the blatant racism... again.
So finally, in 2024, I have had the chance to vote for our first woman president, our first Asian-American president, and our last hope in keeping our democracy. If you make light of that fact, listen to the words TFG has spoken and be prepared to show proof that we'll be able to vote in 2028 after a second round of that. Tell me we won't be living with camps for the "others" and burning day for those who are unworthy. Tell me we won't have special showers or mass deportation that he and his fucking VP lackey have promised. Tell yourself you won't be targeted when the time comes.
Never again, right? RIGHT?
This is my sorrow. I feel joy and tragedy at the same time. I feel pride and large waves of fear due to the anti-science, anti-woman and anti-immigrant stance of so many I'm surrounded by in this state. You own your choices, I'll celebrate mine.
Now I'm going to go eat tacos and play my victory song: Happiness by The 1975.
